You appear to be absolutely right about serial-USB adapters. I must have been conflating this type of adapter with the Griffin gPort, which provides a serial port for B&W G3s and G4 Macs and does enable you to print to a LaserWriter 4/600. Obviously, that's no use for an iBook.
