sounds like a sticky sensor - looking at the front of the Mac, there are leaf 
switches at the bottom of the drive front, to detect the R/W slider (left) and 
the HD hole (right). I would take that drive out and thoroughly clean and 
lubricate it before attempting to use it further. I have run into multiple old 
drives where the grease gummed up the mechanisms and caused the ejector motor 
gears to strip.
