Would an IDE drive partitioned into three chunks count as 'multiple devices'?

I've been unable to get the 9.1 update to run on any of the three
partitions on my 6400, it says something like the partition 6400-A
(Or B or C.) cannot be a destination disk, please choose a different
destination disk.

I was able to upgrade the 9.0.4 to 9.1 on the internal SCSI HD I've
got in the top bay.

I'd really hate having to juggle everything on those three partitions
so I could reformat the disk into one volume, but I could do it if I
have to.

TIA
