Ha! Another victim. Now I don't feel so alone! When I got my
first Mac (Performa 6300) in 1996, I was frustrated that the
sound kept cutting in and out. No matter what I did, the
problem persisted. After a year or so, I found the "take-apart"
manual on the machine. Saw the description of the various parts,
including the IR window. It was put in these machines (and I suspect
your 630 also) as an intended component of the TV/Video system
upgrade. Reading further, I found that the "remotes" you got with
the TV/Video system were essentially Sony devices. As my TV set is
also a Sony, the remote sent signals to the 6300 also. All I ever
had it do was mute the sound. It would have been REALLY frustrating
to have it shut of the computer also! I, too, solved the problem with
a bit of black electrical tape. A neater solution (on my current 6360)
is to pop the front panel and put the tape over the sensor directly).

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.
