Firstly, your printer must have 68k drivers that
will work with the System or Mac OS version you have.

Secondly, the printer usually has to be on a network
or connected to a hardware print server. Some HP
printers that only support a USB connection to Mac
do support 68k, usually an 040 running System 7.5.3
or higher, BUT the printer must be connected via
the parallel port to an HP JetDirect or compatable
Ethernet print server box then the print server
has to be connected to your LAN or to an ethernet
adaptor in your 68k Mac. If the printer you want
to use only has a USB connecton you can pretty much
forget using it from a 68k.

If your printer has a parallel port there may be
a solution through PowerPrint 4.5.2 Serial. That's
a serial to parallel cable and software drivers
for a large number of printers. Unfortunately
version 4.5.2 was the final 68k version and most if
not all of the printers it supports are no longer
being made.

You can find a used cable and copy of PowerPrint then
contact www.strydent.com with the serial number and
info about the cable. They'll usually bump you a
free upgrade to the latest version your cable supports
(except the for the newest version) and offer you
a discount on the newest version with a new cable.

I bought version 3.0.0 with a cable off eBay and got
a free bump to 4.5.0, which is the latest version
the cable that shipped with 3.0.0 supports. Of course
I got the manual, original disks and serial number. :)

The serial number is not required to install
PowerPrint.

There is a version of PowerPrint for networks, which
may allow you to print to a shared printer connected
directly to another Mac, but I don't know if there
was a 68k network version.

So there's some options. You're most likely going
to be "stuck" using an out of production printer
to even have a chance of it working with a 68k Mac
via any sort of connection. The last company to
make printers with a Mac serial port was Epson.

I don't care much for Epson printers because they
have a non-removable printhead and when they get
gunked up with ink there's not much that can be done
outside of shipping it to Epson, if they'll fix an
obsolete printer.
