Has anyone out there used Disk Doubler extensively? Any problems?

I picked up a Mac IIci last week that had it, so I installed it on my
current test/use IIci. It has a very small hard drive so it's kept me
from replacing it at least temporarily.

But, I note that sometimes I get disk errors, especially when installing
applications, but sometime apps even crash.

Expanding the files in use makes the installers work fine, so DD must be
interfering.

Other questions:

* how about OS upgrades? I assume I should decompress the system folder
and then reboot with DD disabled.

* Is there a fast-copy utility available like the one that DD comes
with? I find it MUCH nicer than the default Finder copy. It's
a whole lot faster, especially over the network, but I hate to have to
install DD just to use it. Obviously FREE would be preferred.
