I've used DiskDoubler since the very early 90s, and never had any problems with it on my ols SE, and now on my Powerbook 145 and G4. I never cared much for AutoDoubler, but liked DiskDoubler's ease of use, and wide options (splitfiles, 6 different compression codecs, sea and so on). I was a little sad that Stuffit wound up being the popular compressor, because I always preferred DD. So no problems for me with this app, on many different machines. It sounds to me like you have some corruption on your old machine/HD. If you have the means, copy the drive onto Zip disk, reformat and reinstall the System. Then you can choose what you want to reinstall back from the Zip, expanding it there first and then copying it over. If you're unsure of DiskDoubler, perhaps use an older version of Stuffit, or don't compress at all. Reformatting the drive is probably a good idea anyway with an older acquired machine, but you needn't lose the data. You might also run the Zip contents through Virex before moving any of the files, to scan for old viruses (virii?). I'm pretty sure DiskDoubler is now Abandonware.
