There are flatter heat sinks. Apple used a tall cage-like heat sink
on the PPC601. Some of the early Power 120s (and possibly Power
100s) from Power Computing used a flat heat sink that looks more like
a waffle iron (until you look closely and see that the bumps are a
bunch of very short posts). The waffle iron heat sink is much lower
than the cage heat sink. However, I believe it is also somewhat less
efficient.

I think that Power Computing used the Wafefield 609-50AB (no fan) or
the 61995AB124D1 which has a fan. Look for (I think) "BGA.pdf" at
www.wakefield.com. Digi-Key seems to carry their line so you can do
a Digi-Key search on the part numbers above, and then click on the
"Technical Info" link when the part comes up. That should give you a
link to a datasheet. You're looking for the 609 and 619 series which
are at the end of the document. Those models appear to come with the
clips which attach them to the x100 motherboards over the CPU.

Note that the PM8100/100 and faster used a heat sink with a Peltier
Thermoelectric Cooler attached to the bottom. So if you try this
with anything but an 8100/80 you'll need to do something to provide
the extra cooling.
