I have had this problem numerous times. OS X is just not a reliable 
server connecting via appletalk no matter what client software you 
use.  Try connecting via tcp/ip. Considering the fact that you are 
using system 7.1 a couple of free software installs/upgrades (OT 
1.1.2, appleshare ip client, maybe 7.5.5) should do the trick.
