The easiest way is to use two soldering pencils. The 15 watt grounded pencil at Radio Shack is less than $10 so a pair of them won't set you back much. Just apply one to each terminal at the same time and the SM cap (or resistor) will easily lift off after several (or a few) seconds. I find it's handy to keep a damp sponge on hand, as the smaller components may adhere to one of the pencil tips and you can wipe it off on the sponge. Installing the new one is also simple. My favorite technique is to put a tiny bit of solder on just one of the pads (tin the pad). Then heat the pad with one soldering pencil and place one terminal of the cap on that pad, usually by manipulating the cap with a tweezers or similar tool. Remove the pencil while you're still holding the cap in place. Release it after the solder solidifies. Then it is simple to solder the other pad. The above method avoids the difficulties of surface tension of the solder dragging the component all onto one pad. Jeff Walther -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
