I have an LC-II with a lot (probably 1,000K worth, at least) of old Microsoft Word 5.0 files on it that are important to me. Although the computer still works well, I would like to transfer those files to a more permanent storage solution, ideally one that can be readable by PC's. What is the best way to do this? Do I just laboriously transfer them onto floppy disks and then try to find someone who can transfer the files to a new format? Would a newer Mac be able to read the files off those disks? Sadly, I don't use Mac's anymore and I don't know much about how the newer software reads old Word files.

Hi

Word 4 files work fine on both office98 and 2001 on a mac, even keeping the Word resource fork and displaying the correct icon. Office97 (whatever version of word come with these Office versions) on the pc displays Word 4 properly but you need to load and save each file so the pc knows its a Word file.

My preference for transfer was to put it on a server running samba and netatalk, easy. Emailing files to yourself from the mac and retrieving them with the pc is a option. You might find something usful here http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/pc2mac.html to add to the options Ken has already provided.

Even if your stuck at your pc 24/7 Basilisk II makes for a good mac, spoils you a bit with its speed but it also makes transfers between macs and pc's very easy. Very nice for free software and may help to rekindle a love for old macs. :)

Good luck
