With the "built in" OCR software that came with my old Umax Astra 600S, using black and white document setting and 300DPI, I can get nearly 99% accuracy.
One key is to make sure the lines of text are straight on the scanner bed. I suppose the older scanners scanned in a lower resolution than the "default" of newer machines.
