This is a very timely thread for me. I've just downloaded the CD images for Debian (the 68K version). There are seven CD's !!! Then when I looked at the first it said that most of the commonly used s/w is on the first - whew.
A net install would have been far more efficient if you have the speed to download the iso.
When I read on I realized that I wouldn't be able to fit it on the 80Mb drive in the IIci I was thinking of trying it on. In fact a huge (by 68K Macs standard) amount of HD space is required. Also it sounds very complicated.
A min of 20mb from memory, 80mb would be rather limiting. I've found the 600mb I allocated to fall short.
So now I'm wondering if I'll just end up with a Mac that is so slow I won't want to use it.
You must also have a token mac partition to boot from, the size and use of both is up to you.
Does anybody have any experience with this sort of installation?
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual was a complete enough reference for deb while ftp://ftp.au.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.5.3/mac68k/INSTALL.html#Installation%20of%20base%20files filled the need for netbsd.
Since most people at my work are using either Solaris, or Linux machines, (I'm in the main using my PowerBook G4 and OSX), I had hoped to combine my need to get more UNIX savy with a love of old Macs. However, if the result is too slow then I'm going to "stick with six" on my IIci :-)
A better way to try maybe a minimal install of OS7.1 with exodus or trying exodus under OS6. From what little I've seen the speed is far better than a unix like install, you also don't use the macs hard drive space. A quick ftp search using 'exodus .hqx' or 'exodusII .hqx' does wonders to sort the chaft. I have found versions 5.2 and 6.x in full and demo form, none come with serial numbers which is why I'm happy to explain. Sounds like your workplace would be well suited to this task.
Please don't think I suggest removing sys6.
http://www.wpine.com/ seems to have gone the way of the dinosaur, some useful info is available from the internet archive, evaluation files are not available http://www.powerlan-usa.com/exodus/ are the folk that seem to have taken it up from there and have versions for OS9 and X Version 7.1 and 8 can be found through a google search.
Cheers
