This is a very timely thread for me. I've just downloaded the CD images for Debian (the 68K version). There are seven CD's !!! Then when I looked at the first it said that most of the commonly used s/w is on the first - whew.

When I read on I realized that I wouldn't be able to fit it on the 80Mb drive in the IIci I was thinking of trying it on. In fact a huge (by 68K Macs standard) amount of HD space is required. Also it sounds very complicated.

So now I'm wondering if I'll just end up with a Mac that is so slow I won't want to use it.

Does anybody have any experience with this sort of installation?

Since most people at my work are using either Solaris, or Linux machines, (I'm in the main using my PowerBook G4 and OSX), I had hoped to combine my need to get more UNIX savy with a love of old Macs. However, if the result is too slow then I'm going to "stick with six" on my IIci :-)

John
