It's called a slot but it really isn't. The connector
is long and has several rows of holes in its top.
The cards that plug into it have a connector with lots
of pins.

NuBus "slots" are similar. Apple didn't invent the
NuBus or its connectors. They licensed the design
from (IIRC) Texas Instruments. (Or was it IBM?)
