68 pin, 16bit wide SCSI is designed to be backwards
compatable with 8bit wide narrow SCSI. The adaptor
used must properly terminate the high byte, then the
wide device will automatically "shift" to narrow
mode. Wide SCSI devices must fully meet the
specifcation to be able to do that. It's possible to
connect both wide and narrow devices to a wide bus,
but all narrow devices must come after the wide
devices, and an inline wide to narrow adaptor with
high byte termination should be used between the last
wide device and first narrow device. You can connect
a narrow adaptor on the last wide device but then
that device will run in narrow mode.

That's what I found somewhere on Adaptech's website
a while ago.

Was there ever a Wide SCSI NuBus controller?
Especially
a non-busmaster one? If I could run my 18.2gig
Seagate SCA drive in Wide mode it might be able to
keep up with the Media 100's video capture, which
it can't in narrow mode. I had to RAID 0 stripe a
pair of 2gig drives and a pair of 1gig drives to
do it.

Say hello to Juror #49. Yep, I'm on jury duty until the end of March. Gotta call in
each weekend. Fun.
