Try making checks to the cable the internal hard drive's connected to. Is it firmly seated at both ends? Maybe the whine you hear is the fan? Might it be the power cable to the hard drive is loose? Make the drive in the LC III the external one. Or make the external one the startup disk. See if once booted you can copy the contents of the internal drive to the external.
