Some people here may remember that I posted a while back about my problems with my LCIII. This machine was running system 7.6.1 with no problems up to now. Now when I try to boot it up, the hard drive sounds very whiny and I get a message that says "The startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model. Use the latest installer to update this disk for this model." Several people on this list tried to help me and I have tried all I know how, to no avail. Nothing I've tried will recognize the HD at all. I obtained a copy of 7.6 and, since I have an external CD-ROM, I was able to boot off of the CD. I still cannot see the HD. I tried running Anubis v 2.54 and it sees the CD and "SCSI 00 Quantum 0 MB". I tried formatting and for "Format Failed, Error in Alternate Format, Error 04 A6 Sense Key".
I tried Norton DD, but it doesn't see the HD. I tried Snooper and that says CPU OK, Keyboard failed or missing (I never had a problem with the keyboard - it seems to be fine), Mouse OK, RAM OK, SCSI OK, Clock OK, Modem port failed (I don't currently have a modem attached). The rest of the test failed because it kept asking for another disk, which I apparently don't have.
I am tired of messing with this. I do have an external SCSI drive, which I have currently removed from the chain. I can see that drive when it's hooked up. Does it sound like the internal HD is fried? Should I try replacing it with the HD in the external case?
Suggestions wanted!!
Vanessa
Dear Vanessa,
It sounds like you answered your own question. Seems that your HD has kerplunked.
You can replace it with the HDD from the external case or another from any where else, that is compatible.
I have gotten HD's like the kind you need from ebay relatively cheap.
If you keep the HD in the external case and just use a cable , that will work fine if you don't mind the extra cables and the awkwardness of extra attachments.
i think it is always handy to have an external drive , just in case of times like this, that has an OS on it to boot from.
If I were you , I'd look for a replacement HDD to replace your whiny one inside the LCIII
and save the external one for emergencies and backup.
good luck with your LCIII
