Yes it needs to be taken out, removed from the housing it is in, then
blown out, staying away from the heads, don't want them bouncing around.
Then go to the auto parts store and get some High Temp grease with silicon,
and using a wooden tooth pick get very light amounts of the grease on all
moving parts, again staying away from the heads.(use of the High Temp grease
prevents running of the grease when things get hot) Put it back in it's
housing, and back into the case.
Then get the Floppy Head Cleaning Disk (you picked it up to while you
where out) and clean the heads. Also there is software that you should use
when cleaning the heads. I use one from Aladdin Systems, and try to clean
all my floppy drives heads at least twice a year on the machines I use a
lot.

If you do not want to take it apart, just use the head cleaner, and hope
for the best.

I'd bet it's thousands of hours worth of dust, and dirty heads.
