In reply to Philip Stortz.

Thankyou for your expertise. The battery seems to be alright until I come by
a replacement
(fingers crossed). I had previously tried booting from floppy with the HD
power cable disconnected,
then reconnecting it but when, as you suggested I do the same with the data
cable it worked!
I checked the power supply anyway and it gave 5.06 and 11.85 volts which I
assume is OK.
I tested the HD and it was OK, so I assume (no doubt erroneously) that it
was a cable problem.

It boots just fine from the hard disk now, but it emits a wailing noise from
the speaker which varies
with the spinning of the floppy drive, even with the case on and all the
screening in place.
It's not really a problem but I just wondered if it's a common complaint.

Thanks again for your advice

Regan

PS
It's a french machine running MacOS 6.0.7.
