The disk tools and install 1 floppies of the System 7 distribution on 
800k media contained a minimal System 6 to boot from. You probably chose 
About the Finder from the Apple menu to get the 6.1.x number.

The apple utility may not recognize 3rd party drives. But if SCSI Probe 
can't see it (and your cables are good), the drive is history.
