My experience is that power books are not able to start a disk spinning using the AC power adapter only. They need a working battery to provide the initial starting current. It sounds as though your battery will not take charge - pun intended - at all. Clean contacts, let it charge for a while, discharge it a couple of times, and then give up on it and buy a new one for more than the value of the powerbook. Someday I'm going to build a fake battery that's really a power converter from AC or automotive 12 V and that has some oomph.
