Something to hunt for is the ROM and SWIM upgrade that
allows the SE to use the 1.44M floppy drive.

The SWIM (Super Woz Integrated Machine) chip is the
hardware part, the ROM chip has the software that
enables the System to use the SWIM chip and 1.44M
drive. The SWIM chip replaces the IWM (Integrated Woz
Machine) chip.

You must replace the 800K drive with a 1.44M drive
in order to use 1.44M disks.

Unfortunately the ROM upgrade does not make the
SE 32 bit "clean"*. (Same deal for the ROM and SWIM
upgrade for the Mac II, though it does fix a problem
with allowable SIMM sizes in Bank A.)

*Apple did produce 32bit "clean" ROMs for some of
the models older than the IIci, but only for work
on System 7.1 and as part of the development of the
IIci, which was the first Mac with all 32bit ROM code.
IMHO, Apple missed out on a large upgrade market
they could've had by selling those ROMs.
