Meh, x86 processor alone != PC. I'm sure Apple will make their
platform
so that normal computers cannot run Mac OS X.
Phil Schiller did state officially after the keynote they will
prevent OS X from running on non-Apple Intel hardware. They will
definitely need a hardware method to pull this off, and my guess is
some kind of use of Intel's DRM technology.
Replacing the standard
(and outdated, inadequate, and user-unfriendly) BIOS with OpenFirmware
will go a long way towards that.
Actually, the developer document they released for building universal
binaries states that Intel Macs WILL use a BIOS and not Open
Firmware. Trust me, this will be good for those of us who like to
upgrade our video cards without having to pay 4 times the amount of a
PC equivalent AGP card. ;)
I've been thinking about this a lot, and I have a long list of
practical reasons why this will absolutely be a huge boost for
Apple. I'm planning to blog these thoughts and will post a link when
I'm done.
