Good point, I was only thinking of conventional "file sharing" where
you can actually open files over the network, but FTP is another
approach.
FTP is also free for System 7 (and MacOS 9, and 8 for that matter,
and perhaps also System 6 although I can't swear to it). Download
the free software NCSA Telnet. Launch. In some odd submenu of (I
think) the EDIT menu are the obscurely hidden FTP Server settings,
where you can share out a folder as an FTP share, specify usernames,
passwords, and privileges.
You do of course need a TCP/IP network for FTP. The problem with
needing a TCP network for local file sharing is that, at least on
older machines, it makes it damn difficult to then make a dialup
internet connection. File sharing over TCP/IP is nice and sensible
if your file sharing environment and your internet access environment
can be overlapped, but when your internet connection is via dialup
and your file sharing is local to other machines at home, it's not
convenient at all.
