Y'All, You guys seem to have the right answer. I went to the link Eric described (odd that I didn't find it when I went a-Googling) and there was everything I'd recalled.
About hobby shops: Yeah, I even telephoned my old childhood favorite, Vic's Hobby Supply in Portland, OR. They recalled it, but didn't have it. Meanwhile, I discovered that Dupli-Color has a line of "velvet" finishes. Sort of an ultra-flat with some texture. I tried some on plastic and it did a creditable job of giving it that fibreboard feel. I'll bet it would work on a plastic aftermarket replacement glovebox, making it look and almost feel like the original Fibrit. As always, The List Rules. Thanks, guys. Bert Knupp Nashville, Tennessee Volks, A back issue of "VW Trends" had a nice feature on how to restore an old Fibrit brand VW factory glove compartment box. It involved making up a paste of sawdust and Elmer's, and it seemed to make a beautiful product. Right up to the flocking. . . . Does anybody know a good source of supply where I could order a small quantity of beige-tan flock and adhering paint?
