I'll never get around to writing a book, but I figure
that thanks to the Internet I'll be able to share a
lot of what I've learned over the years with future VW
fanatics even when I'm dead & buried. I've force-fed
my son VW trivia since he was 5 (he's 23 now) and he's
retained a respectable amount, hopefully he'll be able
to take on the responsibility of filling in the gaps
when I finally succumb to Alzheimer's ;)

I had an afterthought about your cooling-system
question...long ago it was thought by most (myself
included) that removing the stock cooler from a SP and
replacing it with an externally-mounted tube & fin
unit would be an upgrade - turns out that when you do
that you end up with wasted air flow to the base of
the LH cylinders and an overall INCREASE in engine
operating temperature. The doghouse fan housing has
internal vanes which even out the distribution of
cooling air...if you were to take one of those and
skin off the doghouse, and patch over the slot that
feeds air to it, an external cooler could be used to
advantage. You could still use the narrow SP fan with
this setup, too, so the doghouse shroud would be the
only stock part you'd need to hunt down.
