could also be:
1) vacuum advance in distributor gunked up or not working right. or vacuum hose
is leaking, plugged up or not properly attached.
2) points are pitted or messing up from too much current going through them so
you might need a ballast resistor. I have a 6 volt 40hp converted to 12 volt
and I use an Accel Supershot coil. They recommend a 1.5 ohm ballast resistor.
3) coil is shot but intermmittant (and you can't tell if it is). so try a new
one.
4) burnt valve(s) and/or poor compression in one or more cyclinders. check
compression.
5) fuel filter is clooged. I use the clear ones. But when engine is starving
for gas they still show fuel going thru them. You have to unplug filter at
carb end and see how much gas is actully going thru it...just be careful and
have a container ready to catch the gas as you don't to do a Richard Pryor act
on either you or your VW and watch that you don't get tangled up in the fan
belt either.
these sound like long shots but are actual problems related to your symptoms
that I've had with my Bug over the years. the coil one was a doosey and took me
2 years to find that one as I figured a coil either worked or it didn't. wrong!
Hope this helps and good luck.
