If you can get the carb top off without destroying the
gasket a rebuild kit won't be needed, but you'd better
at least have one lined up just in case. The
accelerator pump nozzle stays in the carb body by
virtue of a taper-fit, if you grasp it at the base and
wriggle it'll come right out for cleaning. Reinstall
and aim so the squirt comes close to the wall of the
venturi, then tap into place (holding with pliers and
tapping the pliers with a light hammer works).
When you open the throttle the manifold vacuum
decreases - this causes fuel to condense on the
manifold walls so that the air/fuel mixture making it
to the cylinders is lean (the condensed fuel dribbles
down there eventually, but in droplets too large to
burn well). The accelerator pump's function is to
inject enough extra fuel to compensate during this
temporary condition. Keeping the manifold warm so fuel
is less likely to condense in the first place does a
lot for off-idle driveability, especially when it's
cool and damp outside. On a warm day, once the
engine's had a minute or two to warm up you'll hardly
miss the preheat. A functional thermostatic aircleaner
and ducting to bring warm air into the carb helps some
too, as does the initial off-idle timing "kick" that
you get from a stock SVDA or DVDA distributor (a lean
mixture will fire better as a rule with more spark
advance). WORST combination is no preheat, no
thermostatic aircleaner, and a
centrifugal-advance-only distributor...you can usually
get away with any one of those three conditions, but
not two or more.
