The correct number and thickness of gaskets involves putting the covers on
with a few gaskets and judging the "slop" when moving the empty tubes up &
down and from side to side. With the proper combination of gaskets
installed, the axle tubes should "glide" about with no stiffness, but
shouldn't be too loose either. Clearance should be between 0.000" and
0.008". You should note one or two smaller holes near one of the six stud
holes in each gasket. A gasket with only one of these smaller holes should
be 0.004" thick while those with two should be 0.008" thick. When I
assembled mine I first put everything together dry and intentionally used
only a couple of gaskets. I cinched up the six retaining nuts slowly and
carefully until I detected stiffness in the axle tube's movement (a hollow
tube won't easily return to a fully down position after being lifted up). I
then disassembled everything and reassembled using 0.004" more gasket
thickness. When the binding disappeared after being correctly tightened up,
I disassembled everything, noted the combined thickness required, and
repeated the same procedure with the other tube. I then did a final dry run
with both tubes installed, just to be sure, before using a THIN layer of RTV
during final assembly.

Subject: [vintagvw] # of swingaxle side plate gaskets?

hey gang,
I finally got around to pulling the leaky axletube retainer plates off of
the '68 swingaxle type 1 trans installed in my 67 bus. When I first pulled
them off there was alot of form-a-gasket on both sides of the paper
gasket(s) that were in there. I didn't think to count how many paper gaskets
were in there before I started scraping everything away. So now that I have
it cleaned up, the parts store gave me 8-2 hole paper gaskets to put back.
He said I might not need them all. So how many do I need? Thanks for any
help.
