I am sorry for your loss.

It is refreshing that you recognize and appreciate the mentoring of your
grandfather. On the other hand, I am sure your grandfather enjoyed
sharing his experiences with you.

I am mentoring my youngest grandson, and I hope our shared experience
adds value to his life. He seems to enjoy working with me, so it seems
to be beneficial. I gave him the '71 Karmann-Ghia for his high school
graduation present, and he is becoming a quite good mechanic.

Subject: [vintagvw] My grandfather has passed...

Ever since I got into the VW world back in 1993, my grandfather had been
instrumental in helping me work on them and helping me solve various
problems such as stuck drums, breaking loose rusted fasteners, and even
minor things such as how to grease wheel bearings. He was very
old-school in his repairs but that comes from his father who ran a
repair shop in Lewiston, NE repairing model T Fords years ago

I had the wonderful privilege of being the oldest grandson and being
taught so many things from this wonderful man. There was much more left
which I never got to learn once his health wouldn't let him do much
more than walk from the house to the car. His shop still sits there
with his lifetime of tools ready to be graced with the master's hands
and it's so hard to see.

I just wanted to pay tribute to my grandfather 'Papa' and I'm so glad I
got to see him the day before he died and visit with him for an hour -
thanking him for all that he taught me. I also was with him a little
over 2 hours before he passed away - results from stage 4 cancer and a
massive stroke.

Thanks for letting me post this. He's the reason I wear bib overalls
and do repairs the way I do - a hand-me-down from generations ago.
