Sorry to hear of your loss.  I know how difficult that can be.

Over the years I have learned a lot from hanging out with some crusty
curmudgeons (most of which were retired military…grin).  Of those a few stood
out because of the depth of their knowledge on a vast array of topics and
mechanical skills.  One of my grandfathers had been a propeller technician in
WWII working on B-29’s while stationed on Tinian.  He could make almost
anything out of metal with a few basic hand tools.  I think of these guys often
when I encounter a problem that they taught me how to resolve and I smile.  I
often tell my son if you are lucky enough to encounter one of these
individuals, be quiet and absorb as much as you can.  Treasure the time for the
information that they impart is invaluable.

Take care,
Greg

Ever since I got into the VW world back in 1993, my grandfather had been
instrumental in helping me work on them and helping me solve various problems
such as stuck drums, breaking loose rusted fasteners, and even minor things such
as how to grease wheel bearings. He was very old-school in his repairs but that
comes from his father who ran a repair shop in Lewiston, NE repairing model T
Fords years ago http://www.casde.unl.edu/history/counties/pawnee/lewiston/ (top

I had the wonderful privilege of being the oldest grandson and being taught so
many things from this wonderful man. There was much more left which I never got
to learn once his health wouldn't let him do much
more than walk from the house to the car. His shop still sits there with his
lifetime of tools ready to be graced with the master's hands and it's so
hard to see.

I just wanted to pay tribute to my grandfather 'Papa' and I'm so
glad I got to see him the day before he died and visit with him for an hour -
thanking him for all that he taught me. I also was with him a little over 2
hours before he passed away - results from stage 4 cancer and a massive stroke.

Thanks for letting me post this. He's the reason I wear bib overalls and
do repairs the way I do - a hand-me-down from generations ago.
