I agree with Chuck on everything below, but the chance of having a good case
to align bore is not very high.? I personally would now buy a new case unless
you knew the mileage and history of the case you are looking to align bore.? I
have to say I always felt the 1600 single port was one of the quickest engines
off the line, but would run out of power in the higher end.? That being said, I
think it is a good choice for the type of engine you are looking for.

Subject: Re: [vintagvw] Building a 1600 Single Port

I put a 1641 together for my '67 Bug. Sent the 69mm counterweighted
crank, rods, pistons, flywheel, and case to Rimco - they line bored it,
faced the cylinder surfaces, set it up for a full-flow filter, balanced
all the rotating parts, and matched up the weights of the rods and
pistons. I used new single-port heads and a Berg full-flow oil pump.?
?

Outwardly, except for the oil filter, it looks stock. I had to rejet the
carb to make up for the bigger displacement. I'm running a stock German
muffler and peashooters with heater boxes. Stock vacuum advance
distributor with a Pertronix breaker unit.?
?

It's got a lot of torque over the stock 1500, and it is the smoothest
engine I have ever driven. Still gets good mileage, too.?
?
