Volks,
In the continuing saga of 1970 beetle hubcaps, I've encountered a fairly
simple (I hope) conflict:
Of the 6 fairly good hubcaps I possess, three of them are what I'd call
"low-profile," having just a simple rim around 'em, and three have a second
flange, making them stand a good 1/2 inch farther out from the wheel. What
was the correct Type 1 hubcap in 1970? Do I have some caps from a
different year, or a different model? They can all be mounted on a stock
wheel, but the appearances are slightly different.

Polizeikäfer '70
PS - I know, I know -- Not everybody is into German Volkswagen police cars
-- but last year a German TV network ran a series called, "Als die Polizei
noch im Käfer kam" ("When the Police Still Came by Beetle"), with
reminiscences of the late forties and the fifties when Germany was
rebuilding its police force. If you can stand all the talking heads, there
is some neat footage of Beetles tootling through the streets in "low-speed
chases", cops trying to stuff a prisoner into the back seat of a beetle, and
one old cop grimacing and saying, "The damned things had practically no
extras, such as heat, and we had to drive on patrol in them in 17-below
weather." The series was mostly shot in the Cologne area. There are 5
segments in the series, on YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO7CNuDz4g4 and elsewhere. Enjoy!
