Hello,

Back
in August '09 there was some discussion on the list about fixing a
sticky voltage regulator. Most vr's are sealed with no user repair or
adjustment intended. However, the seal (usually just paint or caulk in
the middle of the cover) is easily scraped away and the cover unscrewed
from the regulator body.

The
Bosch two-unit regulator (voltage/current relay and cut-out relay) it
is a maze of relays, contacts, coils and connections. However, using a
1968 Glenn VW manual I have tackled these vr's with limited success and
resurrected several $2 swap-meet ones to be worthy as road trip spares.
The Glenn manual is the only manual that I have found so far that
describes the operation of the regulator, offers some tests to conduct
and offers some suggestions and which contacts and stops to move in
which direction to accomplish adjusting various functions of the
regulator. Most other manuals just say "replace".

The only
drawback is that is the Glenn manual describes the 6 volt regular but
that is essentially the same as the 12 volt regulator. The Glenn VW
repair manual was published up to about 1969 or so and was the
predecessor of the later and maybe better presented (but less complete
regarding voltage regulators) Chilton Manual. These manuals come up on
ebay quite often and are easily obtained for a decent price.

For
testing the electrics on my bug and the various cut-ins and cut-outs of
the regulator & generator setup I can recommend this device, the
Heathkit CM-1050 Auto Analyzer. Nothing fancy or sophisticated, easy to
use and easy to fix if it should develop a problem. They come up on
ebay fairly regular and a decent one can be had very reasonable. Be
sure to get one with both the Operating Manual and the Assembly Manual
and complete with all the various attachments and leads.

Good luck and hope this helps.
