check to see if new fuel pump tubes are backwards. the brazilian pumps sold
now have out on bottom and in on top instead of original german setup of
bottom in and top out. if backwards it wont pump.

Subject: [vintagvw] Tune up now won't start

Morning Volks,
Over the course of two months, I have completed a major tune up:  new plugs,
points, wires, condenser, carb rebuild of a 34 PICT, new fuel pump and push
rod, fuel filter and fuel hoses, changed the oil.
Now it won't start,  I get no gas to the carb or filter, it appears the pump
is not pumping gas. I replaced a NAPA generic fuel pump with one from
MidAmerica and a new fuel push rod. The new push rod is 110mm and the old
one is 90mm. I did not replace the push rod guide as I broke it off half way
in the case and cannot remove it.
I posted the results of the broken guide effort back in April if anyone
remembers.
I am going to adjust the valves and timing once I get it running, but now my
concern is the pump is not getting fuel to the filter or carb.  I did pour
gas in the carb and it backfired twice. I checked the wires and they are
going to the correct plugs, but I will recheck by moving the engine by hand
and checking the marks on the dizzy.  I also plan to remove the new fuel
pump and again turning the engine by hand will see if the push rod is moving
up and down.
I will also remove the fuel line from the pump to the carb and enlist my
wife to turn the ignition while I see if the pump is pumping gas.
Any other suggestions?
I will also have to teach my wife check the timing.  I began this tune up
effort in April and getting up from changing the oil  I felt a little dizzy.
I attributed it to fuel smell and getting up fast.  Well my heart had
different ideas: two heart stoppages, one ambulance ride to the ER and then
a helicopter ride to a trauma hospital and finally a pace maker and I'm
good, except the doctors won't let me near a running engine. :(
The poor bug as been sitting for two months with parts all over the
workbench and very sad looking......
