Glad that Bill and I were able to help Chuck. I miss the old days of the
list where there was so much activity. I don't know if there has been a
disinterest in VWs, or people have moved to web forums, or if they just tire
out and move on. The days of the do-it-yourselfers in the automotive world
are winding down. There will always be a core group of guys like me who
will do it until they die or physically can't. I also think we tend to take
internet for granted. In the early days of the listserv, there were no web
forums and not even an web sites. It was all email lists and usenet groups
and that was it! There are people using internet now that weren't even born
when I first started using it. That makes me feel old!

I don't drive my VWs as much as I used to because I want to take care of
them. I've slowly seen those VWs locally around me get wrecked, junked,
burned up, etc. Me and one other lady are the only 2 who still have our
first Beetles. She is a die-hard and knows the value of the little beetles.
She drives more modern vehicles as a way to preserve her air-cooleds.
That's my excuse to a point. I drive this impound-yard-find Ford Contour in
the winter salt so that I don't have to drive my VWs in it. I end up
driving it in the summer too though. Li'l Red gets driven when the Contour
is down or I just feel like it. It's amazing how it sits for months on end
and when I go to start it, I crank for about 15 seconds while the float
fills back up on the carb and it fires up. Just amazes me - that beetle is
the most reliable little car I've ever had and it's never let me down.

Sorry for the diatribe. I know you can't just do one thing forever and I
know listees move on to other things. I really value the volks I've met on
the list in the past and often wonder what they are up to. I even remember
some of the ones I never met, but have passed on like Scott Yuppa (plane
wreck with father in the late 90s), Jerry Jess, and Bob Hoover (type2).
With their passing, there is a huge library of information, amassed over a
lifetime, gone.

I'm really happy for the wonderful volks I've met, but it really pains me
when they pass away because they've all meant so much to me.

Thanks for the help everyone! Glad to see Bert, Chuck, and Bill are still
around! :)

Erin
