The manual trans vehicles had the same speedo, but they installed a black
plastic plug in that location; only the semi-automatic trans vehicles had a
functional bulbholder installed in that spot.
Did someone (or yourself?) move another bulbholder into that hole by
mistake? You can remove it and put a piece of duct tape over the hole. Or
you can just leave it open and unless daylight shines in, you'll never see
it glow again! Tape off the wire/ bulbholder if it's not one of the other
ones that you actually need! Could it be for the EGR elapsed mileage
counter light instead?

Subject: [vintagvw] ATF lamp on a 1979 SB

I have a 1979 SB. The transmission is manual. There is a red light on
the speedometer that is labeled ATF. This light turned on one day
last month and has been on ever since. Irritating.
If it is like most other lamps, it is activated by grounding one terminal.
Can anyone suggest where that ground wire is located so I can find the
short?
