You shluld not need to remove the speedometer.  The pilot lamp is reachable
in my '70, though you need to move some relays, etc., unless you have very
tiny hands.  The socket can be used for a pilot light for other things, too,
you know.  (I use it as a pilot light for my police spotlight.)  The socket
takes just one wire.
