Volks, I am pondering restoring an old beetle as a re-creation of an ADAC "Yellow Angel" safety patrol car. The German auto club ADAC ran a huge fleet of VW beetle "help cars" on German autobahns and highways from the late '50s until 1981, when (they tell me) they were replaced by larger cars. They had to remove the beetles' rear seat and the passenger seat to make room for all the stuff they had to carry ... everything from fuses to traffic cones, medical supplies to oil cans. Mostly the no-frills "stripper" models (1200 and 1300 spartan versions) were used.
Question: At any of the shows that y'all frequent during the year, has anybody run across any other replicas or restorations in the US of these bright yellow ADAC beetles? They generally had "ADAC-Straßenwacht" in huge lettering on the sides and a yellow light on the roof. I'd like to contact somebody who has already done this. Check out http://www.flickr.com/groups/1566530@N24/pool/ for a photo montage of various "Yellow Angels" over the years. Nearly all were Volkswagens.
