Talking to the local guy who rebuilds starters and generators here, I heard some interesting stories.
He was posted to Germany in the 1960's, and told of talking to a German police officer he met at a rest area off the Autobahn. He asked the cop how he could chase violators with a Beetle. The cop showed him the Porsche motor in the bustle on the back of the Bug, and said it was good for over 180 MPH. Not sure of the aerodynamics of a Bug body over 90 MPH. He didn't mention if it had a front wing.
