Hey, Erin,

There's nearly always an old RHD beetle up for sale on The Samba. There
isn't a strong market for them, so they're often bargain-priced. They
aren't good for much -- other than rural mail delivery.

Why not just go with an Aussie or British Isles RHD model that somebody
imported? I know, I know -- it's the Thrill of the Conversion. But your
old Baja might pay for most of the cost of a born Rechtslenker.

Just sayin'. 8^)

Subject: [vintagvw] Conversion to RHD?

Hey gang, I'm toying with the idea of converting my old beater Baja to RHD
for a postal job I've taken. I was thinking of doing a partial conversion
that would use the pedals from a RHD beetle (1970ish), but use a bracket
with a belt or chain to control the steering wheel and seperate switch for
turn signals. I wouldn't have to convert the dash or steering box that way.
Anyway, my question is about the brake pedal? Is all that is involved is
drilling the appropriate sized holes for the master cylinder and mounting
bolts? Then of course a rerouting of the brake lines and reservoir.
Possibly a new stop tab on the floor to keep the clutch or brake pedal from
coming back too far?

Any comments or suggestions? I was told by an ex-rural postal driver that a
beetle was the best delivery vehicle he ever had. I've got a gas heater I
can install as well. I worry about the repeated wear on the clutch
mechanism, but since this is Saturdays and occasional fill-in days, it
wouldn't be seeing a lot of continuous use.

Thanks for the input. I really need to know about the master cylinder
issue.
Thanks!
