It can easily be done by one person, usually. As far as I know, the
early bolts were regular bolts, and holding the head (under the vehicle)
while tightening the nut in the engine compartment is a problem. Later,
a special bolt with a sot of half-moon head would not turn when you put
on the nut. For the early bolts there are two well-known solutions-
first, there used to be a little magnetic 'wing' wrench you could slap
on the head of the bolt that would keep it from turning. One I have
used is to drill a small (about 1/8") hole in one of the flats of the
bolt head and pound a nail into it, then cut the nail to about 1" long.
This then becomes a permanent way to reinstall the bolt. Of course, if
you can get a second person to hold the wrench on the head (which you
can't really see), that works too. Or maybe you can find a later bolt
with the weird head....
If it isn't pretty new, I would certainly change the starter bushing-
get the one that corresponds to the voltage of the starter you have (as
I recall, the drilling is different in the 12V transmission and needs a
special bushing for a 6V starter or vice-versa.) Alternatively you can
install the starter from an automatic transmission, which has a support
already installed for the outer end of the starter shaft. I'm pretty
sure this is only available if you are doing a 12V starter, though.
It's not hard to pull the bushing without removing the engine. If it's
in bad shape, it may just slide out if you grab it with a little wire
hook. I've even seen it come out on the starter shaft if it's really
boogered up. Otherwise, the best I've found is to grab a tap that
doesn't quite fit, screw it into the bushing and pull with vice-grips.
Don't drop it into the bell housing, though.
Good luck! YMMV.

Kyle,
Not mysterious at all.
Disconnect battery.
Disconnect wiring to the starter.
The engine to transmission bolt above #1 cylinder has to come out and
one other bolt on "bottom" of the starter.
Starter should wiggle straight out toward the front of the car.
Clean all connectors going to the starter motor for good contact.
If you are anal, then you will feel the need to replace the starter
bushing in the transmission case. There are numerous suggestions on
how to do this on the net without the special "tool".
Install new starter. Now for the "hard" part. Put the top bolt pack
in and then the nut from the engine side. If you use a piece of tape
or mastic or somethingto hold the top bolt while you put the washer
and nut on from the engine side it is no big deal.
Tighten both starter bolts evenly, put the starter wires back in the
right places and reconnect the battery.
All done.
Cheers, dave

I have the official factory manual, but it seems a bit sparse in the
section where you new to replace the starter. Any tips
from anybody who has done this before? It mentioned it being a 2
person job with some mysterious bolt involved within the
engine compartment itself.
Let me know,
Kyle

Nick,
Usually low oil pressure is a good indicator, but a qualified machinist
will bolt the case together and torque and then measure the bearing
landings to see if there is a misalignment.
