you can have just one music element such as the Play5, Play3, Connect or Amp, and that will start your Sonos system off, in this config, you will need what ever you have from Sonos connected to your physical network, often in Sonos language they say router, but, this in fact can be your switch, hub etc.
this one music element can then be controlled using one or more Sonos controller. I have 2 iPhone's, 3 iPad's and 4 Mac computers all setup as Sonos controllers, but, you can have just one controller if you wish to.
