Thanks.  There is only one place that looks like it does anything, it is a
button right past the usb slot; it pushes in.
I see nothing  t hat slides.
This piece is a wooden block kind of thing with a wire connected to it which
is the part that fits over the ear.
The wooden piece moves and you kind of move it to the side, I am assuming he
mike is at the bottom of this wooden block. Makes me wonder if I got the
right thing.

Finding the two "bumps" means you are in the right place.
The one closest to the part you put into your ear is actually a switch that
slides toward and away from the earpiece.
Toward the earpiece means the switch is in the off position.

Sorry, I think I forgot a subject line in this message; so I'll start over;
no the Jawbone Era does not seem discoverable when I try to pair it with the
phone, and I can't figure out if the buttons are working sense there is no
way to know if they're pressed, I see a bigger bump between two others on
the block but they don't press down.
