Hi Patti, The flat button by the USB plug is for answering calls, changing volume, and controling the music player, etc. But there are a couple small nubs on the side of the thing below where the earpiece sticks out. The one closest to the earpiece is a tiny round switch that slides up and down. By up. I mean that button you described is at the top of the unit.

There is only one place that looks like it does anything, it is a button right past the usb slot; it pushes in. I see nothing t hat slides. This piece is a wooden block kind of thing with a wire connected to it which is the part that fits over the ear. The wooden piece moves and you kind of move it to the side, I am assuming he mike is at the bottom of this wooden block. Makes me wonder if I got the right thing.
