Trialware is not uncommon, so I wouldn't consider this a example of bait and switch or extortion. It was never stated that the app would always be free, and it didn't tie you into something like an email address or a phone number that you'd want to keep after it stopped being free. I'm not sure what Apple's policy is on this, and I think you have a point that it should have probably been clear up front that it's trialware.
BTW, I like free versus paid versions of apps, but I also like trialware. I like being able to check out the benefits and accessibility of the more advanced features you only get in the paid version before I have to pay for it.
