I approach this as well. I have a Nokia N86 in case of an emergency such
as a dead iPhone but love my iPhone to bits.

This is one of the reasons why I choose to carry and use both an
iPhone and a Nokia N82. A friend of mine calls this "the 2 line
solution" and it works quite well for me. The iPhone and all the apps
and features are great but the phone part of it, in my personal
opinion, is not so great. I prefer to use a phone like the N82 with
buttons for phone related operations such as calling, texting etc. I
realize that this isn't for everyone but but this combination takes
care of most of my communications, daily living and travel needs.
Oh and in case you're wondering, if I had to choose one or the other I
would obviously go with the iPhone since it is a modern, still
evolving and supported accessible platform but as long as I can still
get away with using a phone like the N82 for my phone needs I will
continue to do so right along side the iPhone.

That one still concerns me greatly. Were I in a situation where I was
in an extreme hurry or being threatened, I highly doubt I would be able
to dial 911 quickly. This would also hold were the ambient noise was
high. Much as I love my iPhone, in an emergency I know I would fire off
a call more reliably on my N82 in a pinch. For one thing, I could do it
one-handed while moving quickly away.

The question came from a person who had just seen his first iphone and
couldn''t figure out how a person would dial a number like 911 quickly,
I think and he said he thought there would be no way a person could do
that or call anybody else if they didn't have time.

Hi Patty;
You use the iPhone the same way you use it in any other situation.
You don't need to do anything different except use a little common
sense.
