Yes, you can clear it. You want the recall button. It appears in about the middle of your playable letters when you are creating a word. I cannot speak for others, but when I use recall I usually have to toggle VO off and on for the screen to redraw. If I do not do this, the letters continue to appear in on the board where I am composing. I do not know to whom this bug belongs.
There are a few other similar nuances. Touching "Strikes" with hints on will tell you how many strikes, chances, you have left to guess a word. For this to work you must have hints turned on. The catch is that at times the number is not updated when you miss a letter. To be sure you must toggle VO. To me, these are small things.
