Hello Mark,

As you have suggested, the ability to have an accessible PDF document
depends upon how the PDF document was originally created.

For example, if someone merely created the file with images of text, then on
the face of it, the PDF will not be accessible in iBooks. iBooks is not an
OCR app.

Therefore, if you have an inaccessible PDF document, you will first need to
digitize the text. There are several ways to accomplish this depending on
the resources at your disposal. For instance, if you have OpenBook, you
could use it to OCR the text. While I have not used it yet, the new OCR
feature of Jaws is also available.

Personally, I have a full version of Adobe Acrobat Creator and,
consequently, when I open a PDF document, it performs an OCR on the PDF
document, automatically. I'm not certain if the latest version of Acrobat
Reader offers this feature.

Hopefully, this information will get you started.

Good luck.

Mark

Subject: Converting pdf files to an accessible iBooks format on the PC

Hi all,

I believe this has been covered here before but I have no idea when -- it
seems like a long time ago. Anyway, can someone please reply here or e-mail
me off-list with instructions on how to convert a pdf file so I can read it
in iTunes? I tried opening the pdf file itself but it's just blank pages (I
assume it's due to the digtal formatting.)

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

-Marc
